The November Fast Friday Fabric Challenge, microscopic and paint or dye

Cellular view of a condition I have, was amazed when I looked it up it was kind of pretty on a cellular level.

Started with deconstructed screen printing using dyes, then added some stenciling with fabric paint, minimal free motion thread work topped off with puff paint to give it that 3-d quality.

Finished at 8.5 x 11 in

Screen Printing

I have been taking a online screen printing class at Quilt University.com with artist Lyric Kinard. I have had a blast experimenting with some new techniques and look forward to applying to my work after I practice a little more. Here are some samples so far

This piece utilized several techniques that included freezer paper stencil on a silk screen for the shadow moose (Lyric Kinard's quituniversity.com class). The front moose was transformed using Beth Wheelers difusement maps tutorial and digitally printed, I used trupunto to bring it forward more. The background is paint sticks on a hand painted background and the thread work added.

Silk Screen with rust

I tried silk screening with rust and was happy with original results. Will continue to play and hope for some results that I can wear on a T-shirt.

Cosmos, Fast Friday Challenge

This Ia a mixed media piece for the Fast Friday Challenge. I used black canvas and added layers of paper towels with Shiva paint stick rubbings. There is decorative rice paper, cheese cloth, metallic paints and finished with some sprinklings of beads. I think this looks to crowded but did enjoy playing with some things I am not used to working with.

I just received my complimentary copies of Oct/Nov Quilting Arts Magazine and it has my technique article in there. Check out Sub Urban Art, Selective Rusting with Rita Legere by Ann Flaherty. It is just so exciting I am beyond myself.

Rusty school bus

Started working on this bus, process is a little different,

I sketched outline on Kona muslin and then waxed it with batik wax. I then added the rusty stuff and some vinegar covered it in plastic and waited a couple hours. It was rinsed and dried. I am somewhat pleased with outcome all though the rust did melt into some of the wax. So the borders of bus are not a defined as I would have liked. I think I can work with the results and plan on painting maybe tomorrow will see how the day goes.

Mancuso's and a Tea Party

Well the quilt show was half a success it seams that the Fragments exhibit was missing so only one of my quilts was there. I had the honor of attending the show with approx 25 friends and family and we had a blast. The tea party was great with lots of food and tea for all of us to get pleasantly plumper. The hats ladies were the hit of the day.

There Used To Be A Farm Here

Here is the latest in my Sub-Urban Decay/Rustic Rejuvenation Series. It is 31 " square, and used many techniques including mixed media. Some of the techniques are; Selective Rusting, Sun Printing, Plant Prints, Stamping, Image Transfer, Free Motion Quilting, Hand Painted, Applique,and Yarn Couching. It also incorporates painted Dryer Sheets, Cheese cloth and fusing all melted to simulate paint peeling off of the trucks.

Mancuso's and a Tea Party

I am throwing a Tea Party to complete my afternoon at Mancuso's World Quilt Show in Manchester NH on August 16. I have arraigned for 50-60 friends and family to meet at the Quilt show where two of my pieces are exhibited. "Liberty Hill Farm Truck" as part of the Fragments Urban-Decay challenge and "I've Gut A Hole In My Patch" as part of the Metamorphosis challenge. Both challenges are for the Fiber Arts Council Of S Cal.
Now may bee I am going a little overboard but this is my first Quilt show that I will attend that will have some of my work I feel like it is a debut, so why not act like a debutant and and have a Tea Party.
I am off with a friend on a hunt for a frilly hat for the tea party I am not a very feminine female but I figure I might as well have a blast with it.

60's Style

This piece has been a challenge for me from conception, I have had to use and stretch some design principles. I have had trouble with getting the perspective correct for both vehicles, Since they are two separate photos taken at separate times this has been troubling. I have worked it out well I think.

I used my Selective rusting technique on the vehicles and was able to add some rust to the quilted rock wall to add depth and dimension to it. I have used mostly rusted fabrics on the background and border to enhance the picture.

I finished the background quilting on this to keep the hole piece simplistic and I think it helps give more weight to the feeling of it being aged. The tulle shadow add just the right touch.

Finished piece is 21.5 x 29.5 inches

Wow it has been a hole month since I last posted, It boy have I been busy.I am working on a couple different rusty pieces that are in various stages of completeness.
I just went to a resist workshop out on the seacoast of NH with Wen Redmond. This was a great workshop and we went over a lot of techniques. I really liked working with Wen she has a great sense of humour and is laid back. This type of personality is good for me she allowed me to progress at my pace. I would love to take further workshops with her. Hopefully I will upload some pics of the samples we did soon. I really liked the wax resist and intend to find a workshop in the fall that focuses on wax/ soy/ gutta resists and even a Batik class maybe.
I was also able to do some sun printing today and am quite pleased with the results I think some of this material will find a home in one of those rusty pieces. Again hope to blog pics of it soon, but for tonight I am to tired.
I am going to spend the day tomorrow in Laconia NH at Weirs Beach were all the action is on bike week. Hopefully I will find myself a t-shirt and some riding glasses that I really do need. Looking forward to taking some pictures of all the activities and maybe I will be able to spot a classic rusty bike. There I go with the rusty stuff again Oh well.

Left Out In The Snow

I was stopped in my tracks when I came across this firetruck. It was knee deep in snow and had been plowed in good. I was able to capture several shots. This particular shot spoke to me and was transformed to fabric. This uses an outline of the picture printed on fabric, I the rust dyed the doors and sides that I wanted to show as rust, I then hand painted with fabric paint in with a watercolor effect. Free motion embroidery edges areas of the truck and the quilt lines. I did not feel the need to background quilt as I felt the cloth speaks for itself. I appears old and warn like the truck and that suits this one perfectly.

New Small Business

Wayne and I have started a small business, we have started with greeting cards. The pictures on the cards are of my art, they have been selling well so we have now launched a web site and plan some weekends at the flea market. I have a great feeling about this, like it is part of The Big Plan.
The only problem is that with getting this launched in the last couple of weeks I have not got much art done so I am missing it. I will get back to it soon.

Swirling Nine

This was also painted interfacing fused to layers of fabrics. I then added painted fusing to lay over various bits and strips of threads and fabrics. I then swirled on paint and heated to expand. It was finished with hand painted buttons.

Butterfly Garden

This was a fun piece done by layering various thickness of painted interfacing. The butterflies are embossing powder affixed to a foil and then attached. buttons are UTEE and embossing powder then dotted in centers with paint.

Barn Doors

These where done like the trucks they are smaller at 10x13.

Libery 2 finished

I was able to finish Liberty 2 today. There was a snow day so I got to play. I photo transfer the border and then fused it over the previous border. I then backed and quilted the piece. i am very happy with the outcome of this.

Liberty hill farm truck 2

This picture is larger than before I had to use two pieces of fabric and piece them together to get the size i liked. I feel this one is much more realistic than the first one. I used the same processes accept added some Angelina fibers to get some added iridescence.
